History

JENOPTIK Optical Systems, Inc., a US subsidary of JENOPTIK AG, was formed in 2009 with the merging of JENOPTIK subsidiaries Coastal Optical Systems, Liebmann Optical Company, MEMS Optical and JENOTPIK Polymer Systems, Inc.

Each of the companies, with their unique expertise, brings its own history of successes delivering solutions and developing strong relationships with OEM customers.

Jupiter

Coastal Optical Systems

Coastal Optical Systems, Inc., was founded in 1991 in West Palm Beach by Jay Kumler, Marc Neer, George Fabich and Wilhelm Geissler. The new company leveraged their combined experience from Perkin Elmer, Zygo Corporation, Ball Aerospace and United Technologies Optical Systems (UTOS) to form a unique company completely focused on the design and manufacture of custom lens assemblies.

The company was purchased in 2002 by JENOPTIK and in 2009 was renamed to JENOPTIK Optical Systems, Inc.

Huntsville

MEMS Optical

MEMS Optical, Inc., was founded in 1997 in Huntsville.

Many technologies, processes, computer codes, and intellectual properties were originated at Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE). In 1984 TBE started an R&D program concerned with optical computing. Spatial light modulators, diffractive optics and micro-optics were recognized as necessary component technology required in fabricating optical computers. As a result a diffractive optics research program was initiated.

In 1996 SY Technology, Inc. recognized the commercial potential of the micro-machine technologies that it developed and decided to spin out a commercial venture, MEMS Optical, LLC, to pursue commercial markets.

Rochester

JENOPTIK Polymer Systems, Inc.

In 2005, JENOPTIK Polymer Systems, Inc. was established in Rochester, NY to represent the global capabilities of JENOPTIK Polymer Systems in North America.

Easthampton

Liebmann Optical Company

In 1977, Liebmann Optical Company was founded in Easthampton, MA by Roland Liebmann.

Roland, a master optician formally trained in Germany, had most recently managed the optical shop at Kollmorgen Electro-optical. With his entrepreneurial spirit and optical manufacturing experience, he founded his own business in Easthampton.

The company thrived specializing in small diameter, tight tolerance lens elements demanded by the endoscopy and medical device markets in the Northeast. A new generation of opticians was trained with a focus on precision.
