JENOPTIK Optical Systems, Inc. recently completed the initial Value Stream Mapping phase of an implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles in the Jupiter facility.
The 3 day event utilized eight participants from different areas of the organization to identify the current and desired states of the company and the non-value efforts that reduce efficiency. Value Stream Mapping is the 2nd of four formal phases planned.
Support from State agencies and local professionals
In an effort to improve efficiencies, reduce costs and improve value to delivered to customers, the company contracted with Quality Manufacturing Associates (Coral Sprints, FL) to assist in promoting Lean principle awareness, training and implementation.
The program is supported by the State of Florida through the Incumbent Worker Training program of Workforce Florida (www.workforceflorida.com).
Efficiency improvements resulting from formalized methods and concepts
LEAN is a formal process targeted at helping eliminating the eight wastes inherent in traditional manufacturing:
- Excess inventory
- Waiting Time
- Excess Motion
- Non-Value Adding Processing
- Underutilized Minds

- Workplace Organization
- Quality at the Source
- Demand Pull
- Cellular Flow
- Set-Up Reduction
- Point of Use Storage (POU)
