CoastalOpt® UV-VIS-IR lens images the Dead Sea Scrolls

Working with the Israeli Antiquities Authority, Dr. Greg Bearman (www.snapshotspectra.com) has used the CoastalOpt® UV-VIS-IR 60 mm lens for imaging of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The work, performed in August, is part of a technology qualification for digitizing the scrolls. High resolution visible and IR images will allow for precise detection of deterioration and allow researchers worldwide to view the Scrolls electronically.

Jenoptik featured in the New York Times

JENOPTIK, Coastal's parent, was featured April 13th in a New York Times article on the strong German economy.

Germany’s Export-Led Economy Finds Global Niche

By MARK LANDLER (New York Times)

Published: April 13, 2007

JENA, Germany — For those seeking the elixir that has given new life to Germany’s economy, a visit to this ancient university town in the eastern part of the country would be a good place to start.

Jena is booming these days, as local companies like Jenoptik, which makes lasers and sensors, rack up orders from China, Russia, Europe and the United States. Even the surging euro, which is near record levels against the dollar and the yen — making German exports more expensive in many foreign markets has not yet dented demand.

Aspheric and large aperture test capabilities expanded with QED Technologies SSI-A Interferometer

ssia_sWest Palm Beach, FL (April 16, 2007) – Coastal Optical Systems has completed installation of an enabling technology for precision asphere testing and manufacture. QED Technologies’ SSI-A™ Interferometer greatly increases accuracy and maximum full aperture that can be tested while reducing lead-time and non-recurring costs previously associated with interferometric testing of aspheres.

Coastal Optical Systems receives ISO 9001:2000 certification

Coastal-ISO-Certificate2.jpg(West Palm Beach, FL) Coastal Optical Systems received ISO 9001:2000 certification March 3, 2007.
"Achieving certification with the first audit is something we’re really proud of," said Jay Kumler, president of Coastal. "Achieving this during a period of rapid growth, while adding new departments like coating, and while bringing on new people across the organization really says something for the dedication of the Coastal team.”

Coastal Optical Systems adds in-house coating

Coastal Optical Systems has completed integration of in-house coating capabilities in it’s West Palm Beach facility with the installation of an 850 mm coating chamber.

Better support for OEM customers

"This was the next natural step in the growth of Coastal", says Jay Kumler, president of Coastal. "With the growth in serial production, sub-contracting coatings had become a logistical burden on several serial production projects. With the new chamber, we can meet common ongoing coating requirements in-house and still work with specialty coating houses to meet challenging requirements from customers."

Complements capabilities

The ion-assist chamber manufactured by Tecport Optics, Inc (Orlando, FL), was delivered in February and is configured for 50 mm to 150 mm diameter elements. The chamber's configuration complements capabilities available through sister company Liebmann Optical which specializes in small and micro-lenses (2 mm - 75 mm ø).

Quality Assurance considerations

A PerkinElmer Lambda 950 Spectrophotometer (175nm – 3300 nm) has been added for coating analysis.
